You're not required to have a statement

There's no statutory requirement for your school website to have a statement on British values.

However you'll need to be able to demonstrate that your school promotes British values as part of the Prevent duty.

Ofsted will also judge how you promote British values when looking at how you support pupils' personal development. See paragraph 250 of the School Inspection Handbook for more details.

You can use a British values statement to set out your commitment, and clearly show how your school promotes these values.

What are the fundamental British values?

British values, as set out by the DfE's non-statutory guidance, are:

  • Democracy
  • Individual liberty
  • The rule of law
  • Mutual respect and tolerance

Take a look at our article on how to promote British values across your school for more support.
