Using the Teachers' Standards for appraisal

Maintained schools

Teachers in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in maintained schools are classed as school teachers and are subject to the Education (School Teachers’ Appraisal) (England) Regulations 2012. This means they need to be assessed against the "standards applicable to that teacher" as well as their objectives (regulation 7, paragraph 6).

These standards are:

  • Teachers’ Standards
  • Any other set of teachers' performance standards published by the secretary of state that the governing board, headteacher or local authority (LA) determines is applicable to a teacher's performance

This is explained in regulation 6, paragraph 8.
